At last: a supermarket on campus

03 May 2016

Students and employees have been hoping for a campus supermarket for years. Finally, the university says there are plans to create one.

Finally, there will be a supermarket on campus. People have been pleading for one for years and last week, the university suddenly told daily De Gelderlander that the shop will become reality. Next year, students can stay on campus if they need a bag of raisin buns or carton of milk.

Where the supermarket is supposed to be located, and which retailer will run it, is unclear. Two years ago, chairman Gerard Meijer named the Gymnasion as a possible spot for a ‘Ah to go’-ish shop. ‘But we cannot say anything about the final shop and location.’, says university spokesperson Anja van Kessel. According to her, the university is speaking to several possible retailers.

The decision is a result of the 2014 recommendations from the team ‘Studeren op de Campus’ (studying on campus). The team, associated with the University Student Council, wrote a rapport on how it sees a more livable campus, that makes it more attractive for students to stay at for longer periods. Other remarks, apart from the supermarket, were that the campus needs more space for informal meetings, more study spots and a culture centre.
