The gym

18 mei 2016

This week, I went to the university gym for the first time. As an international student and a Brazilian, some questions immediately popped in my head when I decided to start exercising. How do people behave in a Dutch gym? How would the classes be? Do people care a lot about appearance? I had to figure it out on my own and the conclusions were interesting.

By the time I got there, I noticed that everything was so organized. There is an app for registering for classes and sports, so that you can plan your agenda properly. Also, there is even a coin changer so you can get one-euro- coins to put your stuff in a locker. And don’t forget to print your ticket for each class you subscribe to! On one hand, you can manage your exercising schedule very efficiently and that is very good. On the other hand, it almost seems funny to me how every single thing can be planned and at times I miss the spontaneous and easy-going ways of my country.

After getting past the procedural steps, I chose a spinning class for starters. I really enjoyed the music and the level of the class. However, while spinning I was thinking how Dutch people are quiet during the class. If it were Brazil, people would be more noisy and interactive, so I felt a bit like a weirdo.

In addition to spinning, I went to a Zumba class and absolutely loved it. It was a throwback to the latino dancing spirit and it felt like home. I was also glad to see people from different levels and ages in the class, because when it comes to dancing all that matters (or at least I believe so) is the fun you have.

Therefore, I think the gym is a great place to be, as long as you find something you like to do and feel comfortable with. As an international student, there will always be different things from the country origin, but this is far from a problem if you keep an open mind.
