Nijmegen’s very own grumpy cat has become a hit on Instagram. In just two months, she was able to get over three thousand followers.
The cat, aptly named ‘Angry’, didn’t have an owner. The scraggly yet otherwise unremarkable feline simply roamed the neighbourhood until Anca Pescărașu (Romania) and Franzi Mueller (Germany) moved to Galgenveld. ‘We adopted her and fattened her up a little’, explain the Linguistics students.
‘People just love fat, angry cats’
In early January, they decided to start an Instagram account for Angry. Much to their surprise, Angry instantly became an internet sensation. ‘The Nijmegen cat cafe follows us and we’ve even gotten quite a few messages from people who want to take a picture of Angry and their pet squirrels.’
The housemates of the two exchange students initially wanted nothing to do with the furry feline, although eventually they came to love her. After all, Angry is instafamous. What’s her secret? ‘People just love fat angry cats, which is exactly what Angry is.’ Another explanation the students have heard is that Angry is a calico cat (white with patches of colour). Apparently, calico cats bring good luck.
Mascot
Anca and Franzi use a lot of hashtags when they post pictures of Angry on Instagram. They also follow other cat pages, which contributes to Angry’s popularity. The future of the cat star is uncertain, however, given that her owners will finish their studies in Nijmegen this September. ‘We want to get her a passport so one of us can take her home.’ If not, the students are holding out hope that she can be the next NEC mascot.
