Extra canopies placed at festival site Brakkenstein, organisers prepare for code yellow

24 Aug 2024

KNMI has declared code yellow for this afternoon and tonight due to an impending storm. Organisers of Radboud University's Intro festival are preparing for code yellow. ‘Safety comes first.'

Wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour, thunderstorms, possible flooding, and hail. The KNMI weather forecast isn’t looking too good. Code yellow has been declared throughout the country for the afternoon and evening, due to imminent severe weather. These are not the ideal conditions to enjoy a beer at a festival.

The organisers intend to have the festival take place as planned, orientation coordinator Michèlle Bouwmans says around noon. ‘The safety of visitors is paramount,’ she emphasises. ‘We have made sure there are enough places to shelter from the rain, and of course, we have secured all tents properly.’ Large canopies with picnic tables underneath have been placed in several places on the festivalsite in Park Brakkenstein.

‘We will, of course, keep a close eye on the weather and continue to monitor the situation. If necessary, we will take measures,’ Bouwmans reassures. ‘Besides that, we are hoping it will blow over.’

For many students, the festival is considered the final event of the orientation period. It will take place in the park for the second year in a row. The Partysquad and Fokke Simons have been announced as the big names this time.
