First year psychology classes in cinema Cinemec
First year psychology students will follow classes in Cinemec, the big cinema on the other side of river Waal. Programme director Ruud Meulenbroek is working on a transportation plan.
The psychology department expects high student numbers next year, because of the English bachelor program that it offers, starting next September. Over five hundred first years have applied for the English programme, most of them from Germany. A few hundreds extra students have to be added for the Dutch bachelor programme. Between six hundred and nine hundred students in total are expected in September. ‘It is hard to predict how many will come exactly’, says Meulenbroek.
Because even the biggest classroom on campus does not count more than 482 seats (the one in Grotius building), the psychologists have been looking for an alternative location. They decided on Cinemec, the big cinema on the other side of the Waal. The biggest theater room has over a 700 seats and is one of the biggest theaters in the region. Meulenbroek is trying to find transportation from campus. ‘But we also expect a lot of students to go by bike.’
Evening
The first years also will have to get used to attending workgroup classes in the evenings. The department is planning classes between 18.00 and 20.30, on campus.
Psychology wants to install a numerux fixus
To cope with the high student numbers, psychology wants to install a numerux fixus, starting from the academic year 2017-2018. This afternoon, the faculty is discussing this in a meeting.
This is not possible yet for this year. They do want to discourage students who do seem moderately motivated. ‘If we see a reason for it, we will advise aspiring students to choose a different programme.’
