Foxlane releases single about death

22 feb 2019

Indie band Foxlane releases its first single Reinc. today. Five questions to Foxlane singer and history student Guus Timmermans (21). ‘The more we enter the music scene, the more interesting it gets.’

1. What is your new single about?
‘About the fear of dying. I think it’s fascinating how people deal with death. We know so little about it and about what comes after. All kinds of religions have tried to answer the question of death and haven’t been able to up until today. I can’t bear the idea of dying, that’s why I hope something like reincarnation exists. That’s where the title of this single comes from.’

2. Not really a subject you’d expect from twentysomethings…
‘We mostly write the music first and then add the lyrics. We did the same this time. I thought this song really had a dark feel to it, the idea of death fits that feeling. The song is not too negative though. It allows you a ‘way out’, another way to look at death.’

3. What inspires you?
‘When it comes to the lyrics; everything. It could be a Youtube video, or a word I accidentally hear somewhere. Musically we get inspiration from bands like the Foals and Shame.’

4. What do you expect of your new single?
‘By the end of 2017 we already released our debut EP. We recorded it in the shed of one of our band member’s parents. Now we work with a recording studio, we spent the money we won with the audience award of de Grote Prijs van Nederland on making that happen. Now we work with people who really know what they are talking about. That’s a next step for us. Secretly I think: this could be the shit, this could open people’s eyes. We hope to get selected for de Popronde. The next step is to shine there. But I don’t dare to dream beyond that.

5. What about your studies?
‘One of us studies at the HAN, one in Wageningen. The bass player is doing his masters at the Radboud University. I’m in my fourth year and working on my thesis – about music history. I’ll definitely finish that, because it’s about music and I am interested in everything that has anything to do with music. But people often forget that making music costs time if you want to do it professionally. Besides releasing a single or doing gigs you also have to organise a lot: you have to write press releases, do some networking. On the other hand: making music is what we like best. Recently we played in Den Bosch. There were people in the front singing along to all of our songs and we didn’t even know them. How great is that! The more we enter the music scene, the more interesting it gets. We get more and more contacts. That stimulates us to spend even more time on the music.

The single Reinc. is available on all streaming channels from the 22nd of February. The 28th of February the band plays at Stukafest Groningen and the 2nd of March it’s the opening act of Car Pets in dB’s in Utrecht.
