Jinky creates gel polish nails for her flatmates: ‘If you come up with an idea I’ll make it for you’

What sets Generation Z apart from other generations? What drives today’s youth, and what keeps them awake at night? No one can tell us better than Gen Z themselves. That's why we are portraying 24 students from Radboud University. In this episode: Jinky Teurlings (21) has a special hobby: creating gel polish nails.

‘I also do my housemates’ nails’ ‘When the Netherlands was in the semifinals of the European Championship, I made nails with orange stripes on them. I create something new every fortnight. I might use stars, or hearts, or flowers. I enjoy making little drawings. It’s lovely to spend an hour alone working on it and switching off my phone for a while. I really see it as a moment for myself.

I invested in a special lamp that allows me to dry my gel polish nails myself. In the end, it’s much cheaper than going to a nail salon all the time. I now also do my housemates’ nails. When we went to Down The Rabbit Hole this summer, everyone wanted something fun. You come up with an idea, and I make it for you. I have all kinds of nail polish colours in the house.

People sometimes say I should charge money for it, but then I think I should be able to welcome people in a more salon-like place than my student room. I just tell them to bring me a nice bottle of nail polish. I already have a student job, at Albert Heijn.

Gel polish nails are very much in fashion at the moment. On TikTok, there are lots of videos that I draw inspiration from. My mother also does her own nails. When we have something new, we send each other pictures.’
