New Cultuurcafé: ‘nice and tidy’

22 Sep 2016

The Cultuurcafé has a new appearance. How do the students that go there in breaks like it? 'The cafe looks more open', but it also 'looks unfinished'.

Koen van den Hurk (24), medical biology student, sits at a table drinking coffee. ‘I come here with friends to study and do puzzles, the coffee is good here. Although I usually go to Huygens building for classes, I go here a lot. The staff is nice, and I think the new interior is quite cool. Even though it does look like they took a lot out, but did not put much back.’

Florens Cals (23) is a history student and is having a sandwich at a new table. ‘The barstools feel nice,’ he thinks. ‘The cafe looks a lot more open, it looks nice and tidy. I did find out that they took the games away though: when we wanted to play Trivial Pursuit, we could not find the box anymore.’ On the table where the games were, are only magazines now.aandebar

Nicole van de Raa (22) and her fellow student Maite Huiskamp (23) are both enrolled in a master’s programme communication science. They think the Cultuurcafé improved. ‘It looks less “studenty”, but hey, it looks better. And the coffee here is better than elsewhere.’

Debrah van den Reydt (23) and Kirsten van Kempen (20) are studying at the cafe. The history students think it is a nice place to work. ‘The library drives me crazy,’ says Debrah. ‘I cannot stand the silence. This is the best place to study for me: you hear some background noise, but it does not distract you.’ The ladies think the new furniture is chill, but they do think the cafe looks unfinished. ‘We like the retro wallpaper. If it would have been up to us, the whole cafe should have a seventies look. But we will keep coming, especially for the hot chocolate with cream.’
