To Virginia Maltese (17) from Italy, the orientation week means more than just fun activities and parties. For the Arts and Culture Studies student, the first week on campus is an opportunity to be her true self and explore Nijmegen's hidden spots.
What are you going to study and why?
‘I’m going to study the Arts and Culture bachelor, and I chose it because of its broadness. I looked at comparable courses, but they felt very strict and limited to me, while the Radboud course feels more open, diverse, and flexible.’
How do you like Nijmegen so far?
‘As much as it is exhausting, the orientation week offered a lot of chances to get to know the city and the university. I saw a lot of the campus and also Nijmegen’s beautiful hidden spots during the city tour and I’m in love with everything I’ve seen so far, including the people I’ve met. Everyone has been really sweet.’
What are you looking forward to the most?
‘It might sound crazy, but I’m really looking forward to the essays I’ll have to write. The course I chose encourages you to write essays on any topic you find interesting and that is what excites me the most.’
Is there anything that you’re stressed about?
‘Obviously, apart from being a bit stressed about all the deadlines, I was also a bit scared of getting to know new people. But I’m beyond happy that the orientation week gently pushed me to be myself in front of others. I only came to Nijmegen a few days ago, but I’m happy to say that I already made some great friends.’
