Science faculty celebrates lustrum with André Kuipers and research for kids
The Faculty of Science opened its doors to visitors this weekend in honour of its 65-year existence; the Donders Institute also hosted an Open Day. Visitors could walk the halls of the faculty building and actively participate in various science-minded activities. There was plenty to do, especially for kids. For example, scientists explained the importance of timing in proton collisions through a game of football.
Visitors could also isolate the DNA of a strawberry, and a scientist used a large smoke cannon to explain Bernoulli’s principle, which describes the way gases move through the air. In the event’s main lecture, former astronaut André Kuipers told the young visitors to follow their dreams: ‘Anyone can go to space, as long as you’re healthy and in good shape.’
